UK:  J&E Hall’s new ambient beer cooler can cut energy bills for cellar cooling by up to 40 per cent. The unit uses free cooling to allow beers to be stored at a perfect temperature during the winter months. When the outside temperature is low enough, the fan-operated cooler brings cold air into a beer cellar to reduce the temperature and will switch off the main refrigeration cellar cooler system while it draws cold air from outside – cutting energy bills and saving money.

J&E Hall Product Sales Manager Tony Twine said: “It is estimated that up to a quarter of a pub’s energy bill can be accounted for by its refrigeration requirements – so publicans and breweries are always looking for a more cost effective way to cool their beer cellars.

“The J&E Hall ambient beer cooler can save a large proportion of energy costs over a year – up to 40 per cent. The key to this is the use of free cooling, cold air from outside, a ‘greener’ way of cooling beers. The J & E Hall ambient beer cooler also contains no refrigerants. This helps reduce servicing costs and extends the life of the main cellar cooling system.

“The J&E Hall ambient beer cooler is easy to install and also fits with any make or model of main refrigerated cellar cooling system on the market.”

The ambient beer cooler operates when it’s cold outside at temperatures under 8°C. When temperatures rise above this level the ambient beer cooler will turn itself off and revert back to the main refrigerated cellar cooling system.

The J&E Hall ambient beer cooler is fitted to an internal cellar wall and connected to the outside via a rigid 150mm circular duct. It is then electrically connected to the mains supply and the refrigeration cellar cooling system.

The J&E Hall ambient beer cooler has simple keyhole fixings. It is supplied with:

  • fresh air entry duct
  • ambient air temperature sensor
  • cellar temperature sensor
  • washable air filter
  • 2m mains lead
  • instruction manual.

UK:  Mitsubishi Electric has launched the next generation of its award winning Ecodan air source heat pump range, with a host of new developments, one of which is the use of a plate heat exchanger in a domestic cylinder and patented Scale-Stop technology to remove the risk of limescale build-up.

The launch comes as the Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) moves from its legacy stage into supporting new market growth, with the company developing the advanced range is response to the growing need for renewable heating in the UK.

Ecodan was the first inverter-driven air source heat pump in the UK to receive MCS (Micro Certification Scheme) certification and the first UK-manufactured unit to receive the prestigious Eco Label.  It is also the only air source heat pump that have received the Noise Abatement Society’s ‘Quiet Mark’ and the first to offer intelligent room sensing as standard.

Mitsubishi Electric has invested heavily in R&D facilities at its UK manufacturing plant in Livingston to focus on the experience of the homeowner, simplifying installation and maintenance, and making monitoring even easier:

The next generation – the FTC5 range, which is available from January 2015, includes a complete new range of cylinders which focus on improvements in heat loss performance; hot water recovery efficiency and time; and ease of installation and use.

All ten of the new cylinders dispense with the traditional internal coil method of water heating and instead use an external plate heat exchanger which increases hot water heat up efficiency by 17 per cent over previous models.

The FTC5 range offers three different options for homeowners:

  • The standard level which is pre-installed at the factory, offering remote energy monitoring using partial estimation of energy use;
  • Level Two which includes the addition of an electric meter; and
  • Level Three which adds a Metering and Monitoring Service Package (MMSP) heat meter, enabling homeowners to receive an additional RHI payment of £230 per year for seven years..

Plate heat exchangers use forced convection to heat the water cylinder, rather than the natural convection of a coil and this increases the Delta T, meaning that the water heats up more quickly and recovers temperature quicker when some hot water is used.

Other initiatives included in the launch include:

  • A patented cold inlet diffuser for all of the Pre-plumbed cylinders, which ensures reduced mixing of cold inlet water with stratified hot water.
  • A new titanium immersion heater which sets a new standard for operational life, even in the hardest or most aggressive water conditions. 

“We expect the heat pump market to continue to grow steadily through a combination of the RHI and in answer to the increasing costs of oil and LPG”, explains John Kellett, General Manager of the company’s heating systems. “We have prepared this new range to ensure that Ecodan is ready to answer that growing need”.

INTERNATIONAL:  Alfa Laval has introduced a new compact DM shell-and-tube heat exchanger – the first refrigeration product in this family that has been specially developed for sub-zero temperatires.

The Alfa Laval DM is more compact in size thanks to a new design based on a single-pass dry expansion evaporator instead of the previous two passes, making it more convenient to install in places where space is a constraint. The DM guarantees maximum efficiency at minimum costs, which results in a higher level of competitiveness for applications.

Alfa Laval has developed the DM shell-and-tube heat exchanger with a unique patented refrigerant distribution system in line with the latest European regulations on low GWP refrigerants, optimizing it for R407F and R134a refrigerants, yet maintaining its compatibility with R404a and R507.

The DM shell-and-tube is ideal for supermarket or industrial process cooling as these applications typically demand evaporation temperatures in the range of -10 to -20°C depending on the system efficiency and brines such as propylene and ethylene glycols.

Metal baffles with an advanced design help to improve the brine side performance in the DM shell-and-tube model. Exchange tubes with an inner groove pattern also maximize the heat transfer coefficient and limit the negative effects of pressure drop.

What’s impressive about the DM shell-and-tube heat exchanger is that despite its smaller size, it boasts a significant improvement in performance of at least 15 percent in comparison with the previous model, resulting in a more cost-efficient investment for Alfa Laval’s customers.

UK:  BITZER Advanced Header Technology (BAHT) for tandem and trio Orbit scroll compressors makes it easier to use these products in parallel circuits for air conditioning and heat pump systems. The newly developed suction gas header with integrated oil distribution plays a key role, specifically directing oil to one of the compressors in the tandem and trio units. The system even works when uneven compressors are combined and allows the frequency of a single compressor to be adjusted.

The benefit of BAHT is that only one suction line is required for many compressor combinations. The system functions with consistent reliability at high and low suction gas volume flows and promotes uneven capacity adjustment through different displacements and compressor housing sizes in one unit. Another benefit is that active oil management with an oil separator is no longer necessary for distributing the oil. Even when a compressor is shut off, oil distribution is maintained in the unit.

BITZER’s ORBIT 6 scroll compressor range comprises five models with cooling capacities between 27 and 51 kW. They are ideal for air conditioning systems and heat pumps, featuring low sound levels. The larger ORBIT 8 series has six displacement volumes between 29 and 77 m3/h with 15 to 40 hp outputs. The sound level is about three dB(A) lower than that of conventional compressors. The very low oil carry over rate of less than one per cent improves heat transfer properties and increases system efficiency and reliability.

UK:  The new free pressure temperature app from A-Gas was a talking point at Chillventa 2014. iPad displays on the A-Gas stand showcased the pressure temperature app designed for use on iPhone and Android devices.  

Group Marketing Executive for A-Gas International Hayley Russell said: “We received a great response to our first free app targeted at refrigeration, HVAC contractors and service engineers ­– providing them with fast and comprehensive data straight to their iPhone or Android devices. There was real interest in how easy it is to access information available through social media channels and the difference this can make for engineers and contractors in the industry.

“There was also praise that such a wide range of refrigerants are referred to by the app. We will now listen to feedback from visitors and look at how the app can be developed further to help the industry.”

Information on environmental services available to A-Gas customers, including refrigerant reclamation, also prompted much interest on the stand. 

A-Gas refrigerant experts answered questions from visitors on technical and legislative issues surrounding refrigerant recovery. They also discussed the advantages of using the high capacity Portable Environmental Recovery System (PERSY)  which is available from A-Gas.

Initially designed for supermarket retrofit applications, the unit is offered as a service to any contractors needing to rapidly recover a large amount of refrigerant from a system.

The new high specification Carbon Dioxide (R744) refrigerant, eCO2, launched earlier this year by A-Gas, also drew appreciation. The refrigerant is produced sustainably from waste sugar beet, is UK-sourced, has excellent thermodynamic properties and is a green alternative to HFC gases like R404A. With a moisture content of 5PPM, A-Gas’ eCO2 is the driest CO2 commercially available.

UK:  McQuay UK has launched a new range of R410-based air-cooled heat pumps that feature reliable scroll compressors to deliver low cost, high efficiency heating and cooling for commercial and industrial applications.

With cooling capacities from 164 to 624kW, the flexible and compact ACZH non-inverter heat pump multi-scroll range significantly extends McQuay’s portfolio, which now comprises a comprehensive choice of efficiencies, sound level configurations and hydraulic modules, as well as an extensive variety of options and accessories.

ACZH heat pumps function in a wide range of operating conditions. In cooling mode, they work at ambient temperatures between -10°C and +46°C and, in heating mode, down to -17°C.

Using scroll compressors and axial fans to offer class A efficiency in heating mode, each ACZH unit has an exceptionally small footprint and low weight to increase siting versatility and make installation faster and easier.

McQuay's new range of R410-based air-cooled heat pumpsThe coefficient of performance (CoP) of the units is up to 3.3, with the maximum energy efficiency rating (EER) up to 3.04 and the European seasonal energy efficiency ratio (ESEER) up to a remarkable 4.74 on the reduced sound version.

Three sound level configurations are available in the range – standard, low sound (featuring a compressor sound cabinet), and reduced sound (combining the low sound version with a lower fan speed).

Each ACZH unit has two independent refrigerant circuits employing non-flammable, non-corrosive, non-ozone depleting R410 refrigerant, which results in low energy consumption, excellent product reliability and outstanding overall performance.

The units are controlled by the MicroTech III smart controller for easy integration with building management systems, including those operating Modbus, LonWorks, BacNet and Ethernet TCP/IP.

To maximise versatility, the ACZH range’s hydraulic module incorporates an optional factory-mounted single or twin pump and optional 500 or 1,000 litre buffer tanks, with or without a cabinet.

UK:  Carrier Rental Systems, the leading temporary heating and cooling specialist, is urging industry and building managers to be prepared following predictions of an unusually cold winter.

Forecasters believe that a combination of reduced solar activity, limited artic sea-ice and a weak El Niño will result in bitterly cold conditions, catching industry and the public by surprise following a balmy end to the extended summer.

In anticipation, and as part of its strategic growth plan, CRS has expanded its fleet of temporary heating plant, to ensure it is ready to meet expected high demand for emergency heating. It has doubled capacity at its Thorpe headquarters, and invested in a new fleet of high efficiency boilers, integrated heating packages, fan-powered systems and radiant heaters.

Marc White, CRS director, says: “Leading forecasters, including the Met Office and Exacta, say that all the key models point to an untypically cold winter this year. It would hit particularly hard, given the Indian Summer, which inevitably lulls people into a false sense of security.”

He added: “Plant issues often come to light even with a gentle transition from Autumn to Winter. However, when intensely cold conditions arrive on the heels of an extended warm period, systems can go from standby to maximum capacity literally overnight, resulting in breakdowns and service outages that often prove costly and damaging for companies.”

Given the potential threat to productivity for manufacturers and the impact on the usability of buildings, he said it was an issue that companies and facilities managers need to take seriously and plan ahead for.

Temporary heating provided a way for companies to insure themselves against potentially damaging equipment outages, and also a means of topping up capacity when existing plant becomes maxed-out during prolonged cold conditions.

“From experience, we know that once cold weather arrives and is forecast to set in, our fleet gets committed very rapidly. Those who delay, in the hope that things will improve, may be left without the support they need when conditions remain cold for long periods.”

“We have invested in a significant expansion of our heating fleet. However, it is still finite and the only way to secure a safety net is to reserve the back-up required. It is a prudent and rational investment, and gives reassurance that eventualities are catered for.”

USA:  Star Refrigeration's new subsidiary Azane Inc, is to manufacture its climate friendly and high performance low charge ammonia freezers for the US market.

Azane Inc was launched earlier this year to provide a natural refrigeration solutions in light of the R22 phase out and potential HFC phase down for the US refrigeration industry. Star Refrigeration specializes in low charge packaged ammonia refrigeration systems, including the energy efficient air cooled Azanefreezer (a companion to the Azanechiller) that is designed for use in freezer warehouse.

The Azanefreezer, essentially an ammonia condensing unit, is a complete refrigeration package housed in one unit with two separate ceiling mounted coolers arranged for reverse cycle defrost. The unit contains two screw compressors, designed for industrial installations and located for easy maintenance access. Its low pressure receiver offers efficient operation and allows for a low charge of ammonia. The enhanced aluminium evaporator design provides better performance from the lowest amount of ammonia, without the need for any pumps as found in traditional ammonia systems.

The utilization of low charge, natural refrigerant ammonia, a zero GWP and non ozone depleting substance, should safeguard Azanefreezer from future environmental legislation. The system has a life cycle of 25+ years at maximum operational performance. It also uses reverse cycle defrost – currently the only system to offer this – which defrosts more efficiently.

Expanding on the benefits of ammonia, Derek Hamilton, Azane’s US Business Development Manager, says: “All Azanefreezer components have been selected to minimize the risk of refrigerant leakage, reduce refrigerant charge, simplify maintenance and prolong plant life expectancy. The Azanefreezer has been installed in public warehouses across Europe for over 20 years due to the phase out of R22. It is a fully tested and proven technology which has now been made available to US customers to aid the transition from ozone depleting refrigerants by 2020.”

The ammonia packaged unit has been specifically designed to operate with as little as one tenth of the charge of a traditional refrigeration system, therefore avoiding the burden of OSHA’s PSM and the EPA RPM requirements.

The new EWAP-CO2 coldroom evaporator, targeted at food retailers, wholesalers, and refrigeration contractors, is said to be quick to install due to its prefabricated anchoring points, and easy to both service and maintain thanks to Viessmann’s innovative design.
