USA:  Star Refrigeration's new subsidiary Azane Inc, is to manufacture its climate friendly and high performance low charge ammonia freezers for the US market.

Azane Inc was launched earlier this year to provide a natural refrigeration solutions in light of the R22 phase out and potential HFC phase down for the US refrigeration industry. Star Refrigeration specializes in low charge packaged ammonia refrigeration systems, including the energy efficient air cooled Azanefreezer (a companion to the Azanechiller) that is designed for use in freezer warehouse.

The Azanefreezer, essentially an ammonia condensing unit, is a complete refrigeration package housed in one unit with two separate ceiling mounted coolers arranged for reverse cycle defrost. The unit contains two screw compressors, designed for industrial installations and located for easy maintenance access. Its low pressure receiver offers efficient operation and allows for a low charge of ammonia. The enhanced aluminium evaporator design provides better performance from the lowest amount of ammonia, without the need for any pumps as found in traditional ammonia systems.

The utilization of low charge, natural refrigerant ammonia, a zero GWP and non ozone depleting substance, should safeguard Azanefreezer from future environmental legislation. The system has a life cycle of 25+ years at maximum operational performance. It also uses reverse cycle defrost – currently the only system to offer this – which defrosts more efficiently.

Expanding on the benefits of ammonia, Derek Hamilton, Azane’s US Business Development Manager, says: “All Azanefreezer components have been selected to minimize the risk of refrigerant leakage, reduce refrigerant charge, simplify maintenance and prolong plant life expectancy. The Azanefreezer has been installed in public warehouses across Europe for over 20 years due to the phase out of R22. It is a fully tested and proven technology which has now been made available to US customers to aid the transition from ozone depleting refrigerants by 2020.”

The ammonia packaged unit has been specifically designed to operate with as little as one tenth of the charge of a traditional refrigeration system, therefore avoiding the burden of OSHA’s PSM and the EPA RPM requirements.

EUROPE:  High tech refrigeration and cold storage manufacturer Viessmann, has launched a new evaporator for the CO2 refrigeration market.

The new EWAP-CO2 coldroom evaporator, targeted at food retailers, wholesalers, and refrigeration contractors, is said to be quick to install due to its prefabricated anchoring points, and easy to both service and maintain thanks to Viessmann’s innovative design.

The new Viessmann EWAP-CO2 evaporators come with cooling capacities ranging from 1.6 to 7.2 Kw, and can be specified to include up to four fans.

USA:  Parker Hannifin has launched the Sporlan SMART Service Tool Kit, developed to make HVACR diagnostic readings faster, easier, and more accurate. The kit comes with lightweight wireless sensors that conveniently sync with an iPhone or iPad app, enabling you to read a system’s real-time refrigerant pressures and temperatures without using cumbersome hoses or manifold gauges.

The app automatically calculates and displays superheat and subcooling eliminating manual calculations. All of this data can be easily recorded, saved and emailed from the app allowing technicians to diagnose issues faster, look at trends over time, and provide proof of work.

RCS Energy Management has launched Oracle, an innovative new technology platform for refrigeration and building systems management.

Built around the latest ARM processor and designed to operate through a full range of online and onboard interfaces, the Oracle range offers a scaleable, versatile, affordable and highly-configurable system management solution.

Oracle is an open system, capable of supporting communication with countless third party systems and controllers. As well as sitting at the heart of a fully-networked refrigeration or building management system, it can also operate as a completely standalone control solution within non-networked environments.

Oracle provides a data gateway to all 3rd party monitoring bureau systems such as XML, SNMP, web browser and Java interfaces. Analogue inputs and configurable digital I/O allow Oracle to receive signals from a wide range of plant faults, intruder alerts, leak or alarm systems and BMS functions – with each Oracle unit capable of interfacing with as many as 160 devices.

There are two initial units in the Oracle range, the SM2000 and the SM3000.

The SM2000 Web Manager is a browser-enabled system supervisor solution which allows the user to access the full power of the Oracle system through a desktop browser, tablet or smartphone.

The SM3000 offers all the features of the SM2000, including full browser management, but with the addition of an optional 10.1 colour touchscreen user interface.

Both offer a comprehensive feature-set including: scheduler functions for lighting, heating, night setback, load shedding, dual temperature setpoints and sleep modes; automatic management of device parameters; security for system critical parameters; solid-state storage; 20 point monitoring per networked device; configurable alarm strategies; and configurable resolution for data logging.

EUROPE:  Mitsubishi Electric has pioneered the world's first aluminium heat exchanger in its new City Multi YLM VRF range.

The new City Multi YLM to be launched across Europe includes a world-first aluminium heat exchanger amongst a number of other improvements, to make the new range more efficient.

The heat exchanger comprises aluminium micro-channel flat tubes in place of conventional copper tubing, that Mitsubishi Electric states delivers 26 per cent more contact with the refrigerant, 17 per cent more with the fins and 30 per cent more piping per area, providing efficient refrigerant distribution.

The new models will be available in the UK from January 2015, with greater evaporating temperature controls, new defrost options, reduced refrigerant charge and an induction-heated compressor to reduce standby power by 50%.

Already available in Japan, the company will officially launch the City Multi YLM VRF at next weeks Chillventa HVACR exhibition in Germany.

USA:  Ritchie Engineering Co., Inc. are about to launch the new Yellow Jacket ManTooth wireless digital pressure/temperature gauge, eliminating the need for conventional gauge manifold sets and hoses.

The ManTooth is available as a single pressure wireless digital P/T gauge with clamp or as a dual pressure unit with a P/T module, tether unit and two temperature probe clamps.

The free downloadable ManTooth RSA app receives live refrigerant pressure and temperature readings from one or more ManTooth PT Modules through a wireless Bluetooth connection, and displays the system’s actual pressures, temperatures, superheat and subcooling in an easy-to-read color format on your iPhone, iPad or Android device.

The App converts pressure and temperature readings to your favorite units of measure, corrects for your elevation using GPS, and can be used with any one of 98 refrigerant profiles.

The user can use the App to maintain Service History information about each job location and each piece of equipment and also has a sharing feature which enables Screenshots to be stored by location and equipment, date and time stamped.

It has a range of up to 400ft and includes built-in Schrader ports to easily adjust refrigerant charge. Its rechargeable lithium polymer battery gives up to 10 hours use.

UK:  Through working in partnership with Sainsbury’s, A-Gas has introduced a new carbon dioxide (R744/CO2) analysis and testing service in a move to improve the monitoring of CO2 refrigeration system performance. Ensuring moisture content and other impurities are kept within the recommended levels should be a key focus for everyone involved in the CO2 supply chain in the food production and supermarket industries.

A-Gas Managing Director John Ormerod said: “Natural refrigerants like CO2 are no different to traditional HFCs when it comes to quality. Ensuring CO2 supermarket systems operate within the strict boundaries of the correct moisture specification improves efficiency, reduces maintenance costs and saves money. During conversations with Sainsbury’s refrigeration technical specialist earlier this year, Sainsbury’s requested A-Gas’ expertise to help deliver a solution that would enable the monitoring of the quality of CO2 in their refrigeration systems and thus ensure reliability is maintained.”

Following successful tests with Sainsbury’s, A-Gas has now extended this analysis service to the rest of the HVAC industry. A-Gas provide customers with a suitably-rated cylinder in which they can supply a liquid sample from the refrigeration system. This is returned to A-Gas where it is tested in their state of the art laboratory and a full quantitative assessment is made. 

Sainsbury’s Head of Refrigeration John Skelton said: “This service enables Sainsbury’s to monitor that the quality of the refrigerant within our refrigeration systems is within the manufacturer’s specification ensuring the reliability and longevity of all components.”

Earlier this year, A-Gas launched a new high specification Carbon Dioxide (R744) refrigerant, eCO2. The refrigerant is produced sustainably from waste sugar beet, is UK-sourced, has excellent thermodynamic properties and is a green alternative to HFC gases like R404A, commonly used in these industries. With a moisture content of 5PPM, A-Gas’ eCO2 sets the CO2 standard for the future and is the driest CO2 available in today’s market.

UK:  Resource Data Management has launched a new energy dashboard called Kwheb, which give end users unprecedented information and control over energy usage at individual store, national estate or global level.

The internet-based system draws together data from all energy-using equipment on a network, and presents it in clear graphical form, enabling users to get an immediate at-a-glance view of current energy usage as well as historical trends.

Kwheb harnesses the ability of RDM products to configure and control energy-using plant, while reading a wide range of smart power meters and pulse counters. This gives users the ability progressively to optimise equipment, while seeing the resultant changes in energy burn in real time.

It can focus on any scale of resolution, from a single item of plant, a store, building or factory, up to a national or global estate made up of many thousands of locations.

Once base energy costs have been set, it displays the cost of energy used in a range of currencies, and enables historical comparisons to be made between energy consumption for the current period against the same period last year, last month or last week.

In addition to monitoring electricity use, it can be used to monitor gas consumption, and - where electronically metered - water usage. Stored data can be exported to Excel for further analysis and more detailed reporting.

Andrew Chandler, managing director of RDM, said: “Our new energy dashboard is a very exciting development, but an entirely logical development from our existing control and monitoring products, and builds upon their capabilities. It gives end users a hugely powerful yet very simple-to-use interface, that delivers an immediate snapshot of the energy use in a building or estate.

“It can be used as a high level management tool to monitor and control consumption. A budget can be set for each location, and on-site plant actively managed in order to achieve target expenditure. Predicted overshoot can be addressed in good time, eliminating over-spend and ensuring energy targets are achieved – importantly without compromising the safety of processes or the comfort of building occupants.”

He added: “We believe it is something end users have been dreaming about for a long time.”
